In 1934 whilst living in Paris, he was accepted back to Soyuz Pisateley SSSR, which was unprecedented. After a wave of destructive criticism and expulsion from Soyuz Pisateley that followed Zamyatin's attempts to publish 'We', he wrote to Stalin in 1931 asking for permission to emigrate, which was suprisingly granted. a great prose poem on the fate that might befall all of us if we surrender. Due to his association with opposition groups even before the Revolution, he was arrested and exiled in 1906 and again in 1914. Yevgeny Zamyatins We is a powerfully inventive vision that has influenced. Zamyatin (1884 - 1937) rebelled against the establishment his whole life, not only in his literary works but also in his actions. Orwell on the other hand fully acknowledged that he had read and reviewed a French edition of the novel some months before starting on 1984. Huxley, however, always denied that he had read the work before writing his novel. The work's influence on George Orwell's 1984 and Aldoux Huxley's Brave New World has been well documented. The present work, published by the Chekhov Press in New York was prepared with the help of Zamyatin's widow Liudmila Nikolaevna. However, this extract was not based on the original text, but translated from the English edition. Three years later part of the work appeared in Volia Rossii, a Prague based émigré journal.

In 1924 the first edition in any language was published in English by the US publisher E.P. During the early 1920s Zamyatin's masterpiece circulated in the Soviet Union amongst a small literary circle, and received one public reading but was almost immediately banned. Zamyatin's dystopian novel My is set in a future society dominated by a totalitarian rule over individual personality.
